Una ventana es un vano o hueco elevado sobre el suelo, que se abre en una pared con la finalidad de proporcionar luz y ventilación a la estancia correspondiente. También se denomina ventana al conjunto de dispositivos que se utilizan para cerrar ese vano.

El término proviene del latín ventus (viento), haciendo referencia a la capacidad de ventilación que proporciona. Antiguamente la ventana también se denominaba fenestra ó también denominada "finistra", de forma idéntica a como se llama en latín y en griego. Este sería el modo directo de derivación etimológica. No obstante, aunque ahora este nombre está en desuso, sí se conservan palabras relacionadas con él, como defenestrar que significa arrojar a alguien por una ventana.

El hueco tiene verticales que lo enmarcan lateralmente, por un capellán de gran altura aléizar o vierteaguas que lo remata horizontalmente sobre el antepecho, y por un dintel o por un arco que lo cierra por la parte superior. Tanto el dintel (también denominado cargadero) como, en su caso, el arco, tienen por misión soportar las cargas que produce la parte de muro o pared que gravita sobre el hueco y transmitirlas a las jambas.

El mecanismo de cierre se compone de un marco o bastidor sujeto a las caras interiores del hueco, al que a su vez se fijan mediante herrajes adecuados las hojas, generalmente acristaladas con vidrio.
