"Peyrou" significa "pedregoso" en occitano, lengua romance hablada en la zona del Languedoc. El parque está situado en la zona más alta de la ciudad de Montpellier. La estatua ecuestre de Luis XIV domina las filas de árboles que llevan allí desde desde el siglo XVIII, y justo enfrente de la estatua en bronce se alza el Arco de Triunfo (52m), el punto más elevado de la ciudad. Al otro lado del parque se sitúa la torre de agua y el acueducto de los Arceaux, construido por Pitot en el siglo XVIII para distribuir el agua potable. El depósito de la torre tiene forma hexagonal y está bordeado por columnas de estilo corintio. El parque, que ocupa 3ha, fue construido en 1689. Consta de líneas rectilíneas y espacios simétricos. Antiguamente había olmos, que con el tiempo han sido remplazados por plátanos.
